Implants are a treatment option that can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or to secure a loose denture.  An implant is a titanium post that is placed into the jawbone and allowed to integrate into the surrounding bone.  After a period of healing, the implant is typically restored with an attachment called an abutment and then a crown is cemented over the abutment to complete the restoration.

Advantages of implants

Preservation of adjacent teeth: In replacement of single and sometimes multiple teeth, by doing an implant, you can preserve the adjacent teeth.  This is a big advantage over a doing a bridge, because a bridge requires cutting down, or removing enamel from the teeth next to the space that is going to be restored.  An implant restoration does not require this.

Cleansability:  Single tooth implant restorations can be much easier to keep clean than a bridge.  Usually in the case of single tooth replacement with an implant, the area can be brushed and flossed as normal.  In the case of a bridge, a floss threader and possibly a smaller special brush (a proxy brush) must be used to brush under the bridge to maintain proper oral hygiene to prevent decay.  Decay under a bridge is very likely to occur if the area is not kept clean and this can result in loss of the bridge or even tooth loss.

Preservation of bone: Once a tooth is lost, the bone that was around the tooth root will slowly shrink over time.  When an implant is placed, it will maintain the bone in the area.

Sequence of treatment:
First an examination with proper radiographs and study models must be completed to see if you are a candidate.  If you are, the next appointment will be to place the implant.  In some situations, a second surgery is needed to uncover the implant.  Also, depending on your situation, implant treatment times can vary, but once the implant is placed, average healing times are 3 months for implants placed the lower jaw and 4 months in the upper jaw.  Once the implant has had enough time to heal, it will be checked for proper integration into the jawbone and then the implant can be restored with an abutment and crown.
