Veneers are a type of dental restoration that can be used to repair a broken tooth, change the shape teeth, or change the color of teeth.  Veneers are typically made of porcelain or resin.  To complete the veneers an exam and consultation are first completed to determine your goals and if you are a candidate for veneers.

Completing the veneers usually requires two appointments.
The first appointment is the preparation appointment where some enamel is removed off the teeth that will receive the veneers.  This is to allow room on your teeth for the veneers.  It is very important to note that having veneers is an irreversible procedure and once the enamel is removed, it cannot be replaced.

After the preparations are completed, an impression of your teeth will be made and sent to a dental laboratory that makes the veneers.  During this time, while the lab is making your veneers, you will wear temporary veneers.  The laboratory will usually take 2 weeks to make your veneers.

Once the veneers are made, a second appointment is needed to cement them.  At this appointment, your temporaries will be removed and a permanent cement will be used to retain the veneers.

A nightguard may be recommended after your veneers are completed.  This will help prevent grinding on them while sleeping.  Grinding on them can cause them to chip.  It is very important to note that although veneers can last a long time, they are very likely to require replacement at some point in your life time.  Taking care of them properly will be very important to ensure you get the longest service out of them.  Proper oral hygiene, seeing us regularly, and avoiding bad habits (i.e. tearing things with your front teeth, biting your finger nails, holding objects with your teeth) will help tremendously.
